Ajaccio, the Imperial City

A French commune situated on the western coast of Corse, 390 kilometers from Marseille, Ajaccio serves as the prefecture of South Corse. Also the prefecture, capital and seat of the territorial authority of Corse, the city functions as the island's primary administrative and economic hub. Ajaccio's urban area is Corse's largest, with a population of 106,488 residents as of 2016.

Stunningly bordered by the Mediterranean Sea, Ajaccio is characterized by scattered villages throughout its hinterland. It extends along the northern shore of Ajaccio Gulf, between the Gravona and Parata Point, encompassing the Sanguinaires Islands.

France's first emperor, Napoleon Bonaparte, is undoubtedly the city's emblem, having been born here—hence Ajaccio's designation as the "Imperial City."

A Journey Through the Past

The city of Ajaccio was founded in 1492 following a period of decline in the Middle Ages. The first stone was laid in April 1492 on a promontory called Capo di Bolo at the site intended for a fortress. Thanks to the Genoese, the city flourished. They constructed a citadel south of the city.

The city's name derives from "Roman Adjacium," referring to the resting place for shepherds who descended from the mountains during winter to purchase supplies and sell their goods.

The renowned emperor Napoleon Bonaparte was born in Ajaccio on August 15, 1769, lending tremendous prestige to the destination. This is precisely why it earned the epithet "Imperial City." It is also called "Coral City." Throughout its fascinating history, Ajaccio was notably the first French city liberated during World War II.
